Welcome to MIE Research Phase 1

The Marriage Incubator Experiment is an initiative of Community Life at Asbury Theological Seminary. This experiment has two phases, research and then practice. In the research phase, married students on the ATS campus will have an opportunity to complete a survey that will provide valuable information on their marital satisfaction and on each individuals sense of self.

After the research phase, 20 fortunate couples will participate in a year of counseling and marriage development based on the results of the research.

Informed Consent for Participation in a Research Study

Research Topic: Marital Health of ATS’s Married Students

Description of the research and your participation

Description

You are invited to participate in a research study conducted by Dr. Mathieu S. Gnonhossou and ATS’s Community Life/Spouse and Families Ministries. This research aims at studying the quality of marriage among ATS students. .

Your participation

You are invited to fill out the set of self-report questionnaires. No further commitment is required from you. We estimate that it will take you about 45 minutes to complete the surveys. We recommend that you plan to complete the survey at a time when you can, as much as possible, avoid distractions and complete the entire questionnaire at one sitting.

Risks and Discomforts

While we anticipate few risks involved with this research, some individuals may experience temporary discomfort as they think about some dynamics in their relationships. If the discomfort lingers and is bothersome, please contact Spouse and Family Ministries, 859-858-2315 or spouse@asburyseminary.edu for helpful guidance.

Potential Benefits

This research will help Spouse Family Ministries of ATS better serve married students on all ATS campuses. Questions asked may also prompt you to have healthy conversation with your spouse on topics you hadn’t previously considered. Protection of Confidentiality

The process of this research involves absolute confidentiality. Each set of questionnaires will be numerically coded in order to allow better analysis of responses. Your identity will not be known.

Voluntary Participation

You are free to choose not to participate, and you may withdraw from the study at any time. There is no penalty for refusing to participate or for withdrawing from the study, but you must complete the entire survey to qualify for the incentive.

Who May Self-Exclude

This study is neither a formal therapy process nor a prelude to one. For this reason, if you judge that your marital relationship is highly at risk at this time, you may consider not to participate in this research.

Institutional Permission

The seminary’s Institutional Assessment Committee (IAC), which acts as the seminary’s Institutional Review Board (IRB), has reviewed this research study and has granted permission for it.

I hereby acknowledge that I have read this informed consent and have also been given the opportunity to ask questions or raise concerns about it. I give my full consent to participate in this study, knowing that I may also withdraw should I decide so at any time during this process.

You will answer that you have read and given consent as the first question on the survey.
